Interior design trends often go hand in hand with those of fashion, and the comeback of the stripe is a perfect example of that testament. While striped patterns have been a staple in both homes and closets for decades, there has been a major resurgence of them lately—not only in clothing but in interior design. Whether on upholstered furniture, wallpaper, light fixtures, or curtains, stripes can add a whimsical and eye-catching pattern to any feature in your home.
However, trends are known for fading out (some more quickly than others), often leaving homeowners stuck with a piece of furniture or painted wall that looks more dated than it did before. So, will stripes endure the test of time? To find out, interior design experts offer their opinions on the future of striped patterns and the best ways to use them in your home.

Are Stripes Truly Timeless? Here’s Why They’re So Popular
Jacqueline Norrise, founder of ADL Interiors, says that in the rapidly changing realm of interior design, few patterns have proven to be as enduring as stripes. “Stripes are not merely a pattern, but a cornerstone of design that transcends fleeting trends,” she says. “Their remarkable versatility allows them to seamlessly integrate with many styles, making them a perennial favorite among designers and homeowners alike.”
Mina Lisanin, founder of ML Interiors, agrees, saying that stripes are “definitely here to stay.” Lisanin says that stripes have “a timeless appeal” and will never go out of style. Lindye Galloway, founder of Lindye Galloway Studio, also testifies that stripes aren’t going anywhere anytime soon—stating that the pattern is a classic.
Now that we’ve established that stripes are indeed a timeless pattern and not just a passing fad, let’s delve into why they’re so popular. Our interior design experts give us insight into what makes the simple pattern withstand the ever-changing trends of design.

Historical Significance
Stripes boast a rich legacy in design and fashion, from the iconic Breton stripes adorning French sailors to the iconic pinstripes in traditional suits, Norrise says. Their rich historical roots in clothing lend a sense of timelessness and tradition, possibly even providing comfort or nostalgia to a homeowner.
Versatility
Available in countless variations, stripes can suit any aesthetic, from contemporary to rustic, Lisanin says. Depending on the type of stripe used, they can add a striking focal point to a space or provide understated visual interest to an otherwise bland room design.
“Whether bold or subtle, vertical or horizontal, wide or narrow, stripes possess an uncanny ability to harmonize seamlessly with diverse design aesthetics,” Norrise says.
Illusion of Space
For a small space that you’d like to feel bigger, try using stripes in your design. Stripes can manipulate perception, making narrow rooms appear wider and short ceilings seem higher, Lisanin says. To make a room look more spacious, use horizontal stripes. To make a room appear taller, use vertical ones.

How to Use Stripes in Your Home
If you’re ready to incorporate stripes into your own home, use these designer-approved tips to blend the stylish pattern into your personal design style.
Start Small
If you’re hesitant to commit to stripes in the main living spaces of your home, Laura Hammett, founder of Laura Hammett Interiors, recommends using them in a kid’s bedroom or playroom first. If you’re ready to jump into stripes but with something less permanent than wallpaper or furniture, experiment using the pattern with small accents such as throw pillows, blankets, or lampshades, Norrise suggests.
Mix and Match
Don’t be limited to using only one type of pattern in a room, including stripes. Mix various patterns to easily add depth and visual interest to a space. Also consider mixing different variations of stripes, including their scale and color. Use different sizes of stripes on walls to prevent a visual vertigo effect when looking at them. Since stripes will significantly impact the color palette of the room with their eye-catching effects, choose their color intentionally and carefully. Don’t be afraid to use multiple different colors of stripes in one space for a more playful feel.
