10 carpet trends interior designers are embracing in 2025
Soft underfoot, cocooning and warming, and available in a myriad of designs, it’s a wonder carpet that has had such a bad rep of late. But that’s all about to change in 2025.
I’m mid-renovation and trying to pick through an ocean of different flooring ideas for the various rooms in my home. And while on that search, I’ve managed to gather some serious intel that tells me carpet is about to make a comeback in 2025.
From stripes to retro patterns, earthy neutrals to bold bright colors, carpet is an underlooked canvas for creativity, and once you know all the latest trends below, it can provide a fresh look for homes that are either classic, contemporary, or everything in between.
The right carpet can completely transform a space, adding warmth, texture, and even a sense of drama. So, if you’re looking for carpet trends that will dominate the next year, we’ve got you covered. Here are the 10 trends designers and carpet experts tell us will endure in the coming year.
Carpet trends making it big in 2025

In my quest to find more in-style options for carpets for the cozy rooms in my home, like the bedrooms, I’ve turned to the experts to find out why it is such a great option – and what colors, prints, and weaves we should be looking for in 2025.
‘There is always the Ying and the Yang, the quiet and the loud when it comes to choosing carpet,’ advised Lorna Haigh, creative director at Alternative Flooring.
‘Quiet naturals and muted colors can deliver both tone and texture while still keeping your space feeling soft and gentle. Conversely, loud, strong patterns on the floor shout character but can be tempered by plain textured furnishings or added to in a maximalist scheme. Neither way is wrong, we are all different.’
If you are thinking of replacing the carpet in your home, or are simply intrigued by the latest looks designers and carpet experts are tipping to dominate interior design trends in 2025, read on to explore this year’s biggest carpet trends.
1. Plaid is taking over

We’re jumping straight in with a controversial one: plaid. Once primarily associated with cabin interiors or rustic spaces, plaid and tartan-patterned carpets are being reimagined for contemporary homes in 2025.
‘In the mountain states, I see more and more clients requesting wall-to-wall carpets in bedrooms to create warmth, especially in the cold winter months,’ says designer Kristin Dittmar.’I love incorporating plaid carpets which make a bold statement and add character to an interior.’
Lisa Conway, marketing manager at heritage carpet company Brintons agrees. ‘We’ve seen an increase in desire for cozy, warming patterns like tartans. A wide-checked plaid provides a great starting point from which to develop a room’s palette. The repeat offers a list of color ingredients which you can pluck and apply to the rest of the space through furnishings and accessories,’ Lisa suggests.
2. Color drenching

Moving down from your walls to the floor, color drenching is the best way to create a cozy and cocooning feel with your carpets this year.
Joanna Ramsden from Brockway Carpets says: ‘What happens on the floor in our homes is often dictated and influenced by what decor, furnishings, and furniture is trending,’ Joanna explains. ‘There is a distinct move towards color drenching where all the walls and ceilings are painted in one color and these colors are going darker and richer. Think a curated mix of organic colors such as oxblood, verdant green, spicy ochres, warm browns, and antique golds.’
We predict that designers and homeowners alike will be experimenting with layering a single hue across a room, including the carpet, to ground in maximalist color. This exciting technique adds texture and softness while tying the whole room together in a unified palette.
3. Pile it high

‘In 2025, plush, high-pile carpets in warm shades are making a significant comeback, helping transform interiors into havens of comfort and relaxation,’ says Becky Cash of Victoria Carpets. Evoke a sense of warmth and coziness into your home by choosing soft, lush textures to help create a relaxing atmosphere.
High-pile carpets are perfect for creating cozy, intimate spaces. Textured carpets can come in a variety of patterns and weaves, some subtle and simple, others more intricate and detailed. Twist piles are the flattest texture, while loops create subtle shapes and movement, and natural woven fibers are perhaps the most textured approach you can take.
Jodie Hatton, design manager at Brintons has noticed a significant surge in searches for loop pile and cut pile carpets. ‘We have seen a significant increase in demand for textural cut and loop carpet designs. The varying textures and pile heights introduce a dynamic play of light and shadow, creating a sense of depth and aesthetic impact.’
4. Tactile, earthy neutrals

In terms of carpet color trends, brown and beige are the new gray. Gray carpet was historically one of the most popular carpet colors to have in the home, but over the last few years, there has been a shift away from cooler neutrals such as white and gray in favor of ‘new neutrals’ that embody more warmth and depth.
‘In 2025, interior design trends have shifted from cool and minimalist to cozy and cocooning, inspiring an array of warm neutrals,’ observes David Cormack, marketing director at Cormar Carpets. ‘This shift emphasizes muted, textured interiors, featuring natural elements like terracotta, rich woods, and organic fabrics that create a comforting and grounded atmosphere.’
Clare Jenkinson, designer at Ulster Carpets, agrees. ‘In recent years, color trends have been focused on earthy neutrals but for 2025, there is a clear move towards rich, warmer colors for the home. The love of warm, cozy interiors is still very much evident too and that is why wool-rich carpets are still so popular.’
5. Nod to retro and vintage styles

Bare with us here: a high-footfall area, such as a hallway or living room, is the ideal place to introduce a pattern, as it can help to disguise the effects of everyday wear.
Retro, swirly, floral, and striped pattern carpets are also making a return in the coming years. We love this cozy living room by Sibyl Colefox & John Fowler where they have created a striking statement underfoot using a multi-colored, ’70s-style floor covering that reads like a floral.
Jodie Hatton adds, ‘Mention floral carpet and there can be a tendency to imagine outdated styles but florals don’t have to be chintzy, they can also be dark and dramatic or carefully elegant. ‘Floral’ is an incredibly diverse design term, from bright and bold to small and subtle, floral carpet can be an inspired way to introduce pattern into your home.’
‘Until recently, carpets and rugs tended to be plain, neutral, and mainly used for bedroom carpet ideas only, but patterned carpets are now coming back into favor, and moving into the living room and dining room, too. In the right hands, patterned carpet designs are akin to introducing a work of art into a room and setting a strong design tone. Think of the floor as the room’s main canvas,’ adds Lorna Haigh of Alternative Flooring.
6. Considered materials

‘The natural trend isn’t just for colors – it is also with materials,’ says Rupert Anton from The Carpet Foundation. ‘There is a growing trend towards eco-friendly and biobased materials. Home-owners are becoming a lot more concerned about the materials they use in their home and the impact they have on the planet,’ Rupert explains.
‘Wool is a natural solution and has been proven to be the best floor insulator,’ Rupert continues. ‘While 15% of all household heat disappears through uninsulated floors, this is not the case with carpets. Carpet with underlay is an excellent insulator and can reduce heating costs.’
Lorna Haigh from Alternative Flooring adds: ‘Sisal is the most popular natural fiber option for medium domestic carpets because it’s so versatile. Super hardwearing, it is available in an array of weaves and natural shades.’
Seagrass, which cannot be bleached or dyed, is hand woven, therefore irregularities in the weave are to be expected, which is part of the beauty of it being a natural, craft product.’
Choosing natural materials that are totally biodegradable and plastic-free means they’re not only soft underfoot but kind to the environment too.
7. Carpet runners endure

If you have beautiful wooden flooring in your home that you do not want to fully cover, but want to add a dimension of warmth and texture, then a runner could be the perfect option.
From hallway runner ideas to stair runner ideas, a runner can establish an elegant layered effect and stylish union of contrasting materials, as well as provide a practical, protective surface, as Lorna Haigh from Alternative Flooring explains:
‘For stairs and hallways that get lots of traffic, a more tightly woven wool such as a boucle or Berber is preferable because it can be cleaned easily; or go for a carpet with a fleck in it, which hides a multitude of sins. Before choosing a wool carpet for stairs, either as a fully fitted carpet or as a bespoke stair runner, check the product suitability; not all wool carpets are suitable for use on stairs.’
‘With the trend towards hard flooring in the home; rugs and runners are the go-to for providing aesthetic and artistic inspiration for the living rooms, hallways, and staircases,’ adds Joanna Ramsden from Brockway.

8. Creating a statement in small rooms

2025 will be a year for color and character, so it is no surprise that a plethora of patterns will enter the design realm for carpet trends, but that is not to say that you can’t use them in smaller spaces.
‘Carpet is a fantastic way of introducing color or pattern into the home,’ says Jodie Hatton. ‘The floor is no longer an afterthought. The entire room can be styled working from the floor up.’
Colorful, patterned carpets are ideal for smaller rooms, like kids’ rooms or offices. Where a busy pattern on a wall might be overwhelming, introducing color and pattern on the floor through a rug or carpet can add interest without taking over the space.
‘We often use boldly patterned or brightly colored carpets in small rooms or forgotten back stairs – they liven themselves up when you introduce something unexpected and strong,’ says interior designer Adam Bray.
9. Use carpet to add a pop of color

Vibrant shades will make a bold but beautiful statement in your home, and with the latest paint trends focusing on palettes of rich reds and calming blues, expect to see these shades make their way down to the floor in 2025.
‘Deep and rich colored carpets make a room feel more cozy and colors such as red will always bring a real designer touch. With customers becoming more design savvy we are seeing an increase in vibrant on-trend colors being explored through flooring,’ says Jon Flannigan from Kersaint Cobb.
‘Soft duck egg blue is always popular, but we’re seeing more teals and blacks being used with popping accents.’ Hallway carpet ideas offer an opportunity to be adventurous. ‘People want to create an impact here, so bright hues, such as pink and lime green, and strong patterns are a large part of our collections,’ says Andy Guard of Roger Oates Design.
10. Smart stripes

A stripe – whether wide or narrow – is a classic pattern that will visually elongate and widen a room, just as floorboards do. Striped floor coverings began to be introduced into homes about 10 years ago in a rather tentative way when the first collections arrived on the market.
Decorating with stripes is currently everywhere in interior design, and from taking inspiration from the fabric world, there is now a far greater choice of striped carpet designs available.
‘Stripes combined with subtler tones can add visual interest to the floor, and for those tight on space, linear stripes can also help to enlarge the appearance of a room. This is especially effective in hallways as the stripe draws the eye along the design and appears to elongate the area,’ says Jon Flannigan, product manager at Kersaint Cobb.
Rupert Anton, however, suggests avoiding stripes on your staircase. ‘While consumers still want eye-catching designs for stairs, they are moving to herringbone and geometric designs.’

Jodie Hatton from Brintons advises, ‘It’s key to have the intended use of the room at the forefront of your mind when choosing carpet. What kind of feel do you want to create? How will the room be used? Is the space a reception area where you want to make a statement? Or a room you want to use as a retreat creating a calming and relaxed feel? Having that decision at the forefront of your mind as you choose your carpet will help to guide you towards the perfect choice for your space.’
‘Bolder statement patterns always tend to lend themselves well to hallways, stairs and landing spaces as these tend to be high-traffic areas. As these areas aren’t “lived in” as such they also lend themselves to creating more of a design statement, as there is a limited amount of space for furniture.’
‘The feel of a room is important and a very personal choice, as a successful interior scheme will reflect elements of our personality. Some will want a calming, relaxing bedroom to retreat to whilst others may want to opt for more of a boudoir feel. Carpets to consider for a relaxing room would be a neutral plain. However, for ultimate luxury and a plush feel – take a look at a velvet option.’
What color carpet is best?
Mike Richardson, general manager of Kersaint Cobb says, ‘floorcoverings in soft, light colorways will brighten a room and create the illusion of space. Deep and rich colored carpets will make a room feel more cozy and can be particularly effective in high-traffic areas where dirt can become an issue.
Warmer tonal flooring can help create a more inviting appearance in the home, whilst adding a real designer touch.
For the really bold, try experimenting with color with a vibrant carpet for a real style statement. Think about making the carpet the base of your design scheme, compliment the colorful flooring with a more neutral palette for furniture and accessories to create a modern look.’
