CRESTVIEW, Fla. (WKRG) — An Air Force technical sergeant doesn’t have to worry about paying a house mortgage or any physical issues with his home after the Tunnel to Towers Foundation renovated his home and paid off his mortgage.

According to a TTF news release, Air Force Technical Sergeant Douglas Wilson is a third-generation Airman who received the renovation and mortgage.

“We are so thankful for the renovation. We love everything that Tunnel to Towers has done for us, but owning this home mortgage-free is the biggest help,” said Wilson. “Since I’m on a fixed income, not having to worry about a mortgage is truly a blessing.”

The release said that Wilson was exposed to radiological, chemical, and environmental hazards during his 15 years in the military.

After he injured his knee while working as a civilian aircraft mechanic, doctors found a mass on his brain that was later determined to be Non-Hodgkin’s T-Cell Lymphoma. He had to undergo brain surgery, but has been cancer-free since 2019.

Because of the cancer, he has dealt with physical and mental deterioration, according to the release.

To help him feel more comfortable in his home, the Tunnel to Towers team completed multiple renovations, including:

  • Installed ADA-compliant interior doors in the closet and office

  • Installed grab bars in the master and guest bathrooms

  • Renovated the master bathroom to improve accessibility

  • Installed smart toilets in the master and guest bathrooms

  • Added pull-down, wheelchair-accessible shelving in the kitchen and laundry room

  • Installed new ramps with railings at the garage and front entrance

  • Poured a new outdoor patio

  • Poured a new walkway from the front to the rear of the home

  • Painted the interior of the home and repaired damage caused by his walker

  • Installed a whole-home generator for emergency preparedness

  • Integrated smart-home technology in the master bedroom and main living areas, allowing remote control of lighting, HVAC, security, and sound systems

UPDATE: Santa Rosa County 911 service disruptions ‘resolved,’ officials say

“Tech Sgt. Douglas Wilson answered the call to serve our country, and like so many of our heroes, he is still paying the price for that service today,” said Tunnel to Towers CEO and Chairman Frank Siller. “His story reminds us that not every risk our heroes face ends when they leave the battlefield. We are honored to deliver the peace of mind of a mortgage-free home to his family in recognition of all that he sacrificed for us.”
