‘Home Alone’ House Will Reportedly Be Restored to Its ’90s Christmas Glory After Being Stripped by Past Owner

NEED TO KNOW

  • The Home Alone house’s interior is reportedly being restored to how it appeared in the 1990 holiday film after a previous owner modernized it
  • The Winnetka, Ill., property was sold in January for over $5.5 million to the current owner
  • Macaulay Culkin previously mused about buying the house to make it a “movie fun house” for fans to enjoy

The Home Alone house is about to feel like home again for fans of the classic Christmas movie.

According to NBC5 Chicago, the iconic Winnetka, Ill., house’s interior will be restored to its nostalgic appearance reminiscent of the 1990 film.

Our vision is to bring back the warmth and just the love from the movie,” Scott Price, the project manager of the renovation commissioned by the new owners, told the outlet.

“There was so many great colors and it just made you feel like family and like home and we want to bring that magic back,” he added.

The interior of the five-bedroom, six-bedroom home was previously renovated in 2018 with a modern, all-white aesthetic, much different from the cozy one audiences became enamored with over 30 years ago.

The home, built in 1926 and boasting over 9,000 square feet, was sold for over $5.5 million earlier this year after being listed the previous May for $5.25 million.

The house was the main setting of the holiday film starring Macaulay Culkin, who played Kevin McCallister, an eight-year-old accidentally left at home by his family when they head to Paris. Kevin braces for the holidays alone while also defending the house from robbers, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern.

The McCallister house’s charm has endeared fans for decades with its patterned wallpaper, grand staircase in the entryway and bold colors throughout.

Fans were upset with the recent interior renovation, per NBC Chicago, with some calling it “incredibly depressing” and comparing it to a “sterile” doctor’s office.

Culkin, 45, said that he considered buying the home after it was listed for sale in 2024. “I had half a mind to buy it — just for giggles,” he said in December that year while speaking at a Home Alone screening in Chicago, per The New York Times.

Instead of living there, however, he said he would turn the property into a “movie fun house,” where fans could reenact scenes from the film.

Culkin isn’t the only person who experienced the magic of the McCallister house as a child. Previous resident Laura Abendshien recalled living in the massive house during the movie’s filming schedule. She was only six years old at the time.

“We stayed in the house pretty much the entire period, which was about four or five months,” she said during a 2020 appearance on the U.K. talk show This Morning. “In order to avoid appearing onscreen, we would have to crawl around the window line from room to room.”

She also mentioned that the cast would spend time in the house in between filming. “Macaulay Culkin used my room to study with his tutor and his brother [Kieran] wasn’t filming as much, so he would just hang out in my room,” Abendshien said.

Home Alone‘s success caught her family by surprise, along with the house’s own celebrity status.

“It was very surreal when the movie came out and all of a sudden it’s holiday season in 1990 and it was an endless row of cars and people wanted to see the house and take photographs and that was very new to us, but we grew to love it and we shared the magic of the movie.”
