Key Points

  • Thrift stores are a great place to find unique home decor items under $10.
  • A few designer-favorites include baskets, frames, and decorative books.
  • Glassware, pottery, and brass candleholders are also on designers’ lists.

There’s no denying that decorating your home can be expensive. But thrift stores are an excellent resource for those looking to score some unique, character-filled pieces without breaking the bank, and interior designers know it, too.

As it turns out, many interior designers are regular visitors to thrift stores, always on the hunt for affordable pieces of home decor that will add charm and character to their homes.

We chatted with three interior designers to find out which items they love to grab for under $10 at the thrift store, and they had so many favorites.

Meet the Expert

  • Jacqueline Goncalves is a Los Angeles-based interior designer and founder of Moksa Design, best known for the dramatic spaces she has created for Soho House locations.
  • Lauren Saab is the founder of Saab Studios, a Dallas design studio operating at the intersection of architecture and atmosphere.
  • Kristina Lawrence is the founder and principal designer of Kristina Lawrence Interior Design, based in Park City, Utah.

Baskets

Baskets are invaluable for decorating. From hiding clutter to displaying decorative items, you really can’t have too many of them. Designers agree that baskets are always on their ‘to buy’ list when they hit the thrift store.

“Always, always grab the good baskets,” says Jacqueline Goncalves, interior designer and founder of Moksa Design. “Use them for plants, organizing toiletries, throwing mail in by the door, whatever. I look for natural materials and handmade vibes.”

At just a few bucks each, there’s no reason to buy baskets new.

Brass Candleholders

Versatile, charming, and classic, brass candleholders are always on the shopping list for interior designers. The best part is that most vintage brass candleholders are surprisingly affordable, costing just a few dollars each.

Use them to style bookshelves, create a festive tablescape, or decorate your mantel. The options are truly endless.

“A mix of brass pieces in different heights can instantly make a table or shelf feel styled and collected,” Goncalves says. “They age beautifully, give them a polish or embrace the patina.”

Decorative Hardcover Books

Books are always a great deal at the thrift store, but for interior designers, it’s the pretty hardcover books with decorative spines that they’re always on the lookout for. They can be used for decorating in so many ways.

“I’ll layer them into shelving or stack them as pedestals for objects,” says Lauren Saab, founder and principal designer of Dallas-based interior design studio Saab Studios. “They add a visual rhythm that feels intentional and curated.”

Keep an eye out for books with interesting colors, patterns, or fun titles. And don’t forget to remove the jackets and see what the hardcover itself looks like—you might just find something unexpected hiding under there.

Picture Frames

If you’ve ever had sticker shock from the price of picture frames, you’re not alone. Luckily, stylish frames are a dime a dozen at the thrift store, and interior designers never pass up an opportunity to grab a few on their thrift trips.

From solid wood frames to ornate, vintage pieces, there’s no shortage of frames up for grabs at your local thrift shop.

“Over-the-top ornate, gold-gilded, or wonderfully weathered frames can instantly class up your art and photos, or even be hung empty for that ‘I’m-an-artist-in-my-soul’ gallery wall [feel],” says Kristina Lawrence, founder and principal designer of Kristina Lawrence Interior Design.

On that note, don’t forget to take a look at the art aisle too, not for the artwork itself (although that might be a good idea!), but for the frames.

“Don’t judge the art, look at the frame!” Goncalves says. “I’ve found some beautiful old wood frames for under $10. You can swap in your own photo, a pressed flower, or even just a great piece of fabric. And sometimes, the weird vintage art works in a cool, unexpected way.”

Glassware

The glassware aisle at any thrift store is usually overflowing, so it can take some time and dedication to pick through the items and find some cute pieces. However, it’s always worth it, says Goncalves.

“Cut glass tumblers, footed bowls, etched coupes; they’re so good! I use them for everything from salt and nuts to dessert and cocktails,” she says. “They just feel a little special, even if you’re drinking sparkling water.”

Plus, since glassware is donated regularly, thrift stores don’t hesitate to price it well to ensure it sells. You’re sure to be rewarded for your time with stylish and affordable glassware for your home.

Vases and Ceramic Jugs

Brand new vases can cost a pretty penny, but at the thrift store, you’ll find a large selection of vases, ceramic jugs, and other pottery at a fraction of the price. Plus, they’re almost always in like-new condition (save the vintage pieces, which offer natural character!).

“I look for interesting shapes or that delicious, imperfect glaze,” Goncalves says. “Some of these go for much more at vintage shops, so if you spot one you love, grab it.”
